Rape is a culturally fostered means of suppressing women. Legally we say we deplore it, but mythically we romanticize and perpetuate it, and privately we excuse and overlook it.

The 49-year-old woman was awakened around midnight by an assailant who choked her, dragged her by the hair and raped her so many times before the sun came up that she lost count, police say, according to an article by Associated Press.
Arizona, which still likes to view itself as a cowboy type of state (you know, guns in the back of pickup truck windows, and just general redneck behavior patterns such as chewing and spitting tobacco)... but I am getting off the track here.
The state’s latest Neanderthal ruling is to treat spousal rape different than a regular rape crime with a punishment of no more than 1 1/2 years behind bars, and possibly no prison time at all. Normally, such a violent rape as described by the woman would be punishable by up to 14 years in prison in Arizona. But, because the man is also her husband the crime seems to carry a lesser penalty.
It seems to me that no means no whether on a date or in the marital bed. If the person cannot accept the answer then find a new date, file for divorce or expect to do time in prison and then you’ll see find out how your date or wife feels when Bubba won’t accept your no answer either.

This is incredible. Are we back to subjugating women to the will of their husbands? To treating women as property, so that men can mistreat them with impunity?
Of course, those who see the wrong perpetrated by this ruling are those who would not bring to bear physical force in their relationship, and those who would do so would not be stopped by harsher legal repurcussions. But that doesn't mean our laws, which should represent our better natures, should instead undermine our values and give license to the animals who only masquerade as men.
I thought Arizona was changing it's image. You're likening it to Kentucky (of course in Kentucky if you rape a family member, that's just their idea of a good time.)
When I come home with my mammoth steaks, I like to give the 'ol cave girl a whack on the head with my club, drag her into the bedroom and violate her in as many holes I can find. Then I urinate in the corner, start a fire and burn small rodents until I have enough energy to violate her again.
Of course I don't do that - because I am not a caveman, as the fellow in the story above seems to be. This is one thing I agree with you on, he should be punished as if he was a stranger. But I kind of understand the spousal ruling, being married it creates a more of a he said/she said situation than being raped by a stranger. The husband already has permission to at least be there in the same bed. But he still should get the max punishment.
