Maybe the End is Near

As soon as he ceased to be mad he became merely stupid. There are maladies we must not seek to cure because they alone protect us from others that are more serious.
Marcel Proust (1871 - 1922), novelist.

The whole world has gone mad.

According to the Associated Press:
Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson called on Monday for the assassination of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, calling him a "terrific danger" to the United States.

Robertson, founder of the Christian Coalition of America and a former presidential candidate, said on "The 700 Club" it was the United States' duty to stop Chavez from making Venezuela a "launching pad for communist infiltration and Muslim extremism."

Chavez has emerged as one of the most outspoken critics of President Bush, accusing the United States of conspiring to topple his government and possibly backing plots to assassinate him. U.S. officials have called the accusations ridiculous.

"You know, I don't know about this doctrine of assassination, but if he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it," Robertson said. "It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war ... and I don't think any oil shipments will stop."

It's difficult to even come up with a comment for this.

How about, "so-called religious leaders should not call for the assassination of political figures."

Yeah nice. Here's a slogan: "The Religious Right: Against Death Unless it Can Benfit Our Social Superiority Complex in Some Way."

Order me a t-shirt!

Pat is good for comedy, but if you take him seriously, whoa.

To be fair, the Bush administraton has now publicly denounced Robertson's comments.

I'm thinking, much as I hate divisionist talk, that the 'other side' is so screwing up right now, it's only doing 'us' huge favours.. Give 'em the rope, and all that..

people are starting to see clearly how messed up it all is, in no uncertain terms. That can only do the cause some good. Low approval ratings are proving me right.

Isn't this in the CIA handbook? The U.S. is accustomed to assasinating or otherwise removing government officials, elected or not, when they don't want to play nice with us. I can't count the number of dictators we as a country have killed in the name of democracy.

And it's always proved a raving political success story -- for the people who don't live in that particular country.

Where do I get the T-shirt?
